Shiv Nadar Education

Born in 1945 in a remote village near Tamil Nadu, India to Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi, Nadar studied at Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam and Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School, Madurai.

From June 1955 at sixth standard, he continued his education in Town High School until June 1957 when he joined St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School, Trichy, and completed high school education

Nadar received a pre-university degree in the American College, Madurai and graduated in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.

1967: Walchand Group’s Cooper Engineering Ltd.

1967: He gave it up and started his venture in partnership with Ajai Chowdhry (Ex-Chairman, HCL), Arjun Malhotra (CEO and chairman, Headstrong), Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S. Raman, Mahendra Pratap and DS Puri.

1967: This venture was known as Micro comp, which focused on teledigital calculators in the Indian market.

1980: HCL ventured into the international market and reported 1 million in revenue the same year. They opened Far East Computers in Singapore to sell IT hardware and Nadar remained the largest stakeholder without retaining management control.

2007: Madras University awarded Shiv Nadar an honorary doctorate and also E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 (Services)

2008: Nadar was honoured with a Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award, for his contribution to the IT industry by the Indian Government.

2011: He was listed under Forbes' 48 Heroes of Philanthropy in the Asia Pacific.

2020: Nadar stepped down and handed down the reigns to his daughter Roshni Nadar, the first woman to chair an Indian IT company.

2021: In July 2021, he stepped down as Managing Director of HCL Technologies. In October 2021, he was ranked by Forbes as the third richest person in India.
