Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is observed globally as a tribute to the role of mothers in shaping families, communities, and society at large. Celebrated on the second Sunday of May in many countries, including India, the day acknowledges not only motherhood as a relationship but also the emotional, social, and cultural contributions that mothers make throughout life.

Its modern origins trace back to the early 20th century, when Anna Jarvis in the United States initiated the movement to honour mothers following her own mother’s passing. Her efforts led to the formal recognition of Mother’s Day in 1914, when it was declared a national observance. Over time, the day has evolved into a global occasion, interpreted across cultures in different ways, yet united by a common intent—to express gratitude and recognition.

Beyond its historical beginnings, Mother’s Day today reflects a broader understanding of motherhood. It is not limited to biological roles but extends to all maternal figures who nurture, guide, and support. In contemporary contexts, the day also brings attention to the often-unseen labour that underpins caregiving—balancing professional responsibilities, managing households, and providing emotional stability.

Vat Savitri Vrat

Savitri Vrata, also known as Savitri Brata or Savitri Amavasya, is a revered fasting day that commemorates the virtuous deed of Savitri, who rescued her husband, Satyavan, from the clutches of the god of death, Yama. This observance takes place on the new moon day in the month of Jyeshtha.

Married Hindu women partake in this tradition, fasting to invoke blessings for the long and healthy life of their husbands. The celebration of Savitri Vrata is particularly prominent in Indian states such as Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and in Nepal.

A similar festival is observed as Vat Purnima, coinciding with the full moon of Jyestha, in regions including Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, and Karnataka.

This festival, with variations in name and customs, underscores the enduring cultural significance of honoring marital devotion and the sacred bond between husband and wife across diverse regions in India.
