Chidambaram's mother, Lakshmi Acchi, was the daughter of Sir Annamalai Chettiar, a prominent banker and merchant who was honoured with the title of Raja by the British. Sir Annamalai Chettiar was not only the founder of Annamalai University but also the driving force behind the establishment of the United India Insurance Company Limited.

Additionally, his brother, Ramaswami Chettiar, played a pivotal role in the founding of the Indian Bank and was a co-founder of another significant financial institution, the Indian Overseas Bank.

Chidambaram is married to Nalini Chidambaram, the daughter of Justice (Retd.) Palapatti Sadaya Goundar Kailasam of the Supreme Court and Mrs. Soundra Kailasam, a renowned Tamil poet and author. Nalini Chidambaram is a distinguished senior advocate practising in the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court of India.

The couple is proud parents to a son, Karti P. Chidambaram, who completed his BBA degree at the University of Texas, Austin, and holds a Master in Law from the University of Cambridge. 

Karti is actively engaged in Tamil Nadu state politics as a member of the Congress Party's AICC. He is married to Dr. Srinidhi Rangarajan, a well-known Bharathanatyam dancer and medical doctor affiliated with the Apollo Group of Hospitals in Chennai. Karti and Srinidhi are blessed with a daughter named Aditi Nalini Chidambaram.
