Early Entrepreneurial Urge

Deepak's entrepreneurial journey commenced at a young age when, as a 16-year-old, he sourced CDs and tech magazines to earn pocket money. His unquenchable thirst for knowledge and technology set the stage for what would become a remarkable career in the tech industry.

In 2005, Deepak laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial dreams by founding Swades Solutions. He didn't stop there – during his high school summer vacations, he created an e-commerce website, which he later sold to a friend when he entered college. These early ventures exemplified his relentless drive to innovate.

The Birth of Innoz Technologies

Deepak Ravindran's most dramatic phase of life began when he dropped out of college in his final semester to co-found Innoz Technologies Pvt Ltd.

The pivotal moment arrived when he and three friends - Hisam, Ashwin, and Abhinav - decided to join the iAccelerator'09 program, which provided them with their first external source of funding.

Their journey led them to the incubator at the Centre for Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship at IIM Ahmedabad.

Innoz's inception with "SMSGYAN - Spreading Knowledge through Innovation" marked a turning point.

This innovative platform addressed a crucial need: providing answers from the internet to mobile phones without requiring online access. It essentially empowered feature phones to become smart by delivering internet information in a simple format.

The service quickly gained traction, both on and off-campus, processing over one billion requests with more than 120 million users. Deepak's vision for Innoz was based on a profound understanding of the limited internet access among the masses and the cost-effective delivery of valuable knowledge.

The Struggles and Triumphs

The journey of building Innoz was not without its share of challenges. Convincing his family, peers, and faculty about his entrepreneurial goals proved daunting, as societal norms often favoured secure, well-paying jobs. Deepak and his co-founders had to drop out of college to follow their dreams.

The struggles were real, but their determination bore fruit. A deal with Airtel at a Café Coffee Day marked a turning point, and soon, other major operators like Vodafone, Aircel, Idea, Loop Mobile, and Tata Docomo, among others, joined Innoz's clientele.

Innoz's achievements were recognised with several awards, including being selected as the Red Herring Global 100 and Asia 100 winner for 2010 and making the Nasscom Top 8 Emerging Companies in India for 2010.

Innovation in Messaging

Deepak Ravindran's core strength has been the messaging industry. Over the years, he's adapted to changing technology trends.

His venture, Lookup, which garnered support from Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and Infosys's Kris Gopalakrishnan, came to life as a hyperlocal messaging app that connects businesses with local consumers.

Unlike traditional platforms, Lookup ensured that consumers could chat with storekeepers without sharing personal contact numbers, enhancing privacy and convenience.

The Serial Entrepreneur's Evolution

Deepak's journey illustrates the changing tech landscape. He transitioned from Innoz, an SMS-based search engine, to Lookup, driven by the fusion of messaging and apps, in response to the growing dominance of data over voice.

Despite his unconventional path, Deepak has earned a place alongside esteemed innovators in the tech industry. His name is featured among notable figures such as Richard Branson, Evan Williams, Guy Kawasaki, and Tony Hsieh, reflecting the extraordinary impact of his work and ideas.
