India’s electric-mobility market has matured considerably since the first wave of EV adoption began taking shape. Yet beneath the visible growth in electric vehicles lies a less visible challenge: building batteries that can deliver the safety, reliability and performance required for everyday mobility. For two- and three-wheelers used in delivery and last-mile operations, for electric buses and four-wheelers, and increasingly for commercial and industrial applications, the battery is not simply another component. It is central to how the vehicle performs and how confidently it can be deployed.

When Neuron Energy entered the market in 2018, India’s EV ecosystem was still developing, and lithium-ion technology was far from being as established as it is today. The company entered an industry where market trust had to be built alongside technical capability. Battery fires were also beginning to affect consumer confidence, while manufacturers remained dependent on imported cells and Battery Management System components.

It was in this environment that Pratik Kamdar founded Neuron Energy with a vision to accelerate India’s transition to clean mobility and advanced energy storage. A Master’s degree in Finance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, combined with experience in strategic consulting and real estate development, including a stint at Jones Lang LaSalle, gave him a background that was different from the conventional engineering route into the battery industry.

His role at Neuron has since extended across strategic growth, OEM partnerships, sales and new-product development. The company’s journey has moved from building lithium-ion expertise to expanding across EV categories, developing smart battery technologies, scaling manufacturing and, more recently, preparing to enter the wider energy-storage market.

The philosophy behind that journey is captured in Pratik’s own words:

The Evolution of Neuron Energy

Neuron’s progression has closely followed the evolution of the market it entered. Its journey traces back to 2017 beginnings, and the company was founded in 2018. Lithium-ion expertise became a focus in 2019, followed by OEM partnerships in 2020 and expansion across EV segments in 2021. In 2022, the company pushed further into smart battery innovation.

The next stage brought a wider national footprint. Neuron expanded across India in 2023, broadened its energy ecosystem in 2024 and commissioned its Pune facility while reaching manufacturing at scale in 2025.

The journey required Kamdar to address several challenges simultaneously. Lithium-ion technology had to earn market trust in an ecosystem that was still nascent. Battery safety required significant investment at a time when incidents involving EV fires were affecting consumer confidence. At the same time, the supply chain remained dependent on imported cells and BMS components.

Neuron responded by building its capabilities around battery engineering, product development and manufacturing rather than limiting its focus to a single EV segment. Its AIS 156 Phase II amend 3 certified product range now spans electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers across L3 and L5 categories, electric buses, four-wheelers, e-tractors, golf carts and material-handling equipment. The portfolio also includes UPS and inverter batteries, Battery Energy Storage Systems ranging from 150 kWh to 5 MWh, power-backup solutions and telecom battery packs. EV charging has become another part of the portfolio. The company introduced off-board and on-board chargers in 2024, extending its offering beyond battery packs. Its solutions also cover light commercial vehicles and drone applications.

For Pratik, the company’s growth has been closely tied to its ability to build OEM relationships while continuing to develop products for changing requirements across the EV ecosystem. His involvement in sales, the OEM network and new-product development has been central to that expansion.

What It Takes to Build at Scale

The scale of a battery business ultimately depends on what happens inside its manufacturing facilities. For Neuron, manufacturing has developed alongside its product and customer base. The company operates two manufacturing facilities — in Pune and Delhi — with a combined installed manufacturing capacity of 5 GWh across five advanced, 100% digitally traceable production lines.

The facilities are ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified. Their capabilities include automated spot and laser welding, IP67-compliant validation, complete MES and ERP traceability and 100% end-of-line testing.

The Kapashera facility in New Delhi and the Pune plant form the manufacturing base supporting this expansion. Alongside production infrastructure, the facilities provide local manufacturing employment through a workforce that now exceeds 150 people, strengthening domestic, “Make in India” battery-manufacturing capability.

The manufacturing footprint supports a growing national customer base. Neuron serves more than 300 customers across 50+ cities through a 100+ strong pan-India distributor network spanning Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with its wider network also reaching Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

Its operating scale is reflected in deployment numbers. Neuron’s batteries have powered more than 250,000 EVs and supported the deployment of over 170,000 kWh of clean energy nationally. The company sells more than 36,000 two-wheeler batteries and more than 60,000 three-wheeler batteries across India annually.

Behind this scale is an operating culture built around seven values: Integrity, Innovation-Driven Thinking, Customer Centrality, Empathy & Collaboration, an Inclusive Culture, a Growth Mindset and Agility.

For Pratik, manufacturing discipline and customer confidence are closely connected. The battery has to perform consistently after it leaves the production line, making testing, traceability and quality part of the product itself rather than simply the final stages of production.

The R&D Behind the Portfolio

Neuron has built one of the industry’s largest dedicated R&D teams around a deliberate multi-technology approach. Rather than relying on a single battery chemistry, its development programme spans multiple chemistries, systems and applications.

Sodium-ion battery technology forms part of this roadmap, alongside immersion cooling systems, AI-enabled battery diagnostics, intelligent SMART BMS and advanced thermal engineering. The company is also working with emerging technologies such as aluminium-air and solid-state batteries. The breadth of this work reflects the range of applications Neuron serves. Battery requirements vary between a two-wheeler used for daily delivery operations, a three-wheeler operating in commercial logistics, an electric bus, an e-tractor or an industrial power-backup system. A single technology approach cannot necessarily address every application in the same way. Neuron has consequently continued to develop across different product platforms while maintaining a customer-first approach. The objective is to combine advanced technology with financially efficient products and services across EV batteries and energy-storage systems. Product support has also become part of this evolution. In 2023, Neuron introduced remote assistance for repairing battery packs. Its development of on-board and off-board chargers in 2024 further expanded its role in the EV ecosystem.

Its mission is to create and promote technologically advanced batteries and EV charging solutions, with the ambition of becoming one of the most loved and leading EV battery providers in India. The wider vision is to lead India’s transition to a clean-energy future by developing products and solutions that empower sustainable transportation and energy ecosystems.

The Move Beyond the Vehicle

By 2025, Neuron had become one of India’s leading battery partners for EV OEMs. Its next phase will take the business beyond the vehicle and into grid-scale energy storage. The company has announced plans for a new Rs 100 crore BESS facility in Maharashtra, currently under development. Once operational, the facility is designed to manufacture modular Battery Energy Storage Systems that store surplus renewable energy and release it during periods of peak demand.

When complete, the move will expand Neuron’s presence from batteries used in electric mobility to infrastructure designed around the storage of electricity itself. The planned facility builds on Neuron’s existing, smaller-scale energy-storage portfolio — BESS systems from 150 kWh to 5 MWh, along with UPS and inverter batteries, telecom battery packs and power-backup solutions — that the company already manufactures and sells today. The transition into energy infrastructure is being accompanied by investment in battery recycling and second-life applications. These efforts form part of Neuron’s objective of building a more circular and resilient energy ecosystem.

The company’s R&D agenda is moving in the same direction. Sodium-ion technology, immersion cooling, AI-enabled diagnostics and advanced thermal engineering are being developed alongside intelligent battery systems and next-generation chemistry.

For Pratik, this expansion is a natural progression from the capabilities developed in the EV market. His focus is on broadening Neuron’s role as battery technology becomes increasingly relevant across mobility and energy storage.

The move also gives Neuron a wider platform for its clean-energy ambition. The company’s original vision was not limited to electric vehicles; it was centred on sustainable transportation and energy ecosystems.

The Next EV Growth Wave Is Outside the Metros

While grid-scale storage is set to open a new market, Neuron is also concentrating on a very different growth opportunity: the expansion of electric mobility across Tier-2 and Tier-3 India.

The leadership sees these markets as the real engine of the country’s next EV growth wave. Neuron’s distributor network already reaches states including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, alongside Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The focus has particular relevance for two- and three-wheelers. These vehicles are deeply connected with delivery operations, the gig economy and last-mile logistics, where operating costs and vehicle availability directly affect the economics of the business.

Neuron’s batteries deliver 30-40% lower maintenance costs for EV fleets, providing a direct benefit to operators using electric two- and three-wheelers for commercial activity.

The company’s scale across these markets is supported by more than 300 customers, a presence in more than 50 cities and a 100+ strong distributor network. Its annual sales of more than 36,000 two-wheeler batteries and more than 60,000 three-wheeler batteries provide another indication of the importance of these segments to its business. For Neuron, expanding clean mobility beyond the largest cities is both a business opportunity and part of its wider contribution. A broader distribution footprint makes battery technology accessible to more markets, while its manufacturing facilities support domestic employment and strengthen India’s own battery-production capabilities.

Building What Comes Next

Neuron’s growth has been driven by a steady expansion in manufacturing capability, OEM relationships and product range, alongside its planned move into grid-scale energy storage through the upcoming Rs 100 crore BESS facility in Maharashtra. The next challenge, however, extends beyond Neuron’s own operations. Pratik believes India needs to reduce its dependence on imported battery cells and BMS components by developing deeper domestic manufacturing capability. He also sees greater standardisation across battery formats and specifications as an important step toward easing supply-chain and production complexity for manufacturers across the ecosystem.

That view aligns with the broader direction of Neuron’s own development: building more capabilities within the battery ecosystem rather than remaining limited to a single product.

The company is continuing to invest in sodium-ion and other emerging chemistries, intelligent battery diagnostics, thermal engineering, immersion cooling, recycling and second-life applications. At the same time, its manufacturing footprint, OEM relationships, distributor network and energy-storage portfolio continue to expand. For Pratik, the objective is ultimately tied to the same principle that shaped Neuron when it entered the EV market. Battery technology can enable the clean-energy transition only when customers can depend on it. More than eight years after its founding, Neuron has moved from building lithium-ion expertise in an emerging EV market to powering more than 250,000 electric vehicles, deploying more than 170,000 kWh of clean energy and operating 5 GWh of installed manufacturing capacity across five digitally traceable production lines.

Its next chapter will extend those capabilities into grid-scale storage once the Maharashtra facility comes online, while continuing to address the growing requirements of electric mobility across India. The journey from EV batteries to broader energy infrastructure is therefore not a departure from Neuron’s original purpose. It is an extension of it, building battery technologies and energy solutions designed to support a cleaner, more sustainable transportation and energy ecosystem.

And throughout that journey, Pratik’s leadership philosophy remains the simplest description of what Neuron is trying to build: trust in the technology, discipline in how it is made, and the capability to take it further.
