Auchincloss was seeking a partner in India to establish a subsidiary for enzyme production, specifically papain. Kiran agreed to the partnership, under the condition that if she wanted to leave within six months, she would be given a brewmaster position.

In 1978, she founded Biocon India, setting up shop in the garage of her rented house in Bengaluru with a seed capital of just Rs. 10,000. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that would lead to the creation of a biotechnology empire.
