Guru Purnima 2024 - A Holy Festival Of Guru-Shishya Relationship

Guru Purnima is celebrated with utmost importance in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Guru is a Sanskrit word where “Gu” stands for ‘darkness’ and “Ru” stands for removal of darkness, while Poornima means full moon. Guru Purnima also plays an important role for farmers, who worship for good rainfall for their upcoming crop.

This festival is celebrated very prominently in India, Bhutan and Nepal. Guru Purnima is also celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Ved Vyasa who edited and divided the Vedas and wrote the Puranas.

On this auspicious festival, people start their day by taking a holy bath and follow a strict vegetarian diet. Some people also perform Vyas Puja, Havan and Yagya.

People also visit their guru's ashram. It is said that on this day, people should serve their Guru and seek their blessings by touching their feet. On this day, people begin with their spiritual lesson.

People believe that Guru Purnima is considered an auspicious day to take Diksha. Some people also offer fruits, garlands, clothes, food and dakshina to the gurus as a token of love and respect. Dishes like puri-chole, halwa, khichdi, and sweets are served on this day.

This festival is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of June or July. On Guru Purnima, people follow a diet in which they restrict themselves from consuming salt, rice, or any kind of heavy food and also meals made from cereals and can eat only yogurt and fruits.

People break their fast after the rituals of Guru Purnima are completed. Guru Purnima should be celebrated by worshipping the Gurus and practising their teachings for enlightenment in life.
