Born on February 19, 1970, in Sasthamkotta, Kollam district in Kerala, Meera has seamlessly transitioned from a prominent journalist at Malayala Manorama to a highly acclaimed writer, earning a host of awards and accolades along the way.
Meera's formative years were influenced by her parents, Ramachandran Pillai and Amritakumari, both professors. Her intellectual upbringing and keen observations of the world around her would later serve as fertile ground for her literary works.
She completed her pre-degree from D.B College, Sasthamcotta, and furthered her education by earning a master's degree in Communicative English from the Gandhigram Rural Institute in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu.
In 1993, K. R. Meera broke new ground by becoming the first female journalist to be employed by the prestigious Malayala Manorama newspaper, based in Kottayam. During her tenure, she reported extensively on a wide range of topics and published several investigative stories that brought her numerous awards and accolades.
Notably, her in-depth series on the struggles of women labourers in Kerala earned her the PUCL Human Rights National Award for Journalism in 1998. Her work also received the Chowara Parameswaran Award, presented by the Kerala Press Academy, and the Deepalaya National Journalism Award for Child Rights in 2001.
However, in 2006, Meera decided to pivot her career towards full-time writing, leaving behind a successful journalistic career to pursue her passion for fiction.
Meera's journey as a writer commenced in 2001, and she quickly gained recognition for her exceptional storytelling abilities. Her debut short story collection, "Ormayude Njarambu," was published in 2002, marking the beginning of a prolific writing career.
This collection was a testament to her storytelling prowess, earning her the Gita Hiranyan Endowment Award from the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and the Ankanam Literary Award.
Her subsequent works, including "Mohamanja" and "Ave Maria," further solidified her status as a formidable literary talent. In 2008, she was honoured with the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for the collection "Ave Maria," where her stories delved into the complexities of Kerala's Communist ideology and the lasting impact it had on families.
Meera's literary contributions also include two novellas and a series of novels, such as "Aa Maratheyum Marannu Marannu Njan," "Meera Saadhu," "Nethronmeelanam," and "Yudasinte Suvishesham." Five of her short novels were compiled into a single book titled "Meerayude Novellakal" in 2014, making her work more accessible to readers.
Meera's magnum opus, "Aarachaar," published in 2012, stands as a significant milestone in Malayalam literature. Originally serialised in Madhyamam Weekly, this novel tells the gripping tale of a family of executioners, tracing their lineage back to the fourth century BC.
The protagonist, Chetna, is a formidable woman who defies societal norms and seeks to inherit this unique profession.
"Aarachaar" has garnered widespread acclaim and received numerous awards, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2013, the Odakkuzhal Award in 2013, the Vayalar Award in 2014, and the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 2015. Additionally, the novel was shortlisted for the 2016 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.
Meera's masterful storytelling in "Aarachaar" invites readers to explore themes of identity, power, and lineage, reminiscent of the classic work "Khasakkinte Itihasam" by O. V. Vijayan.
