Eid-al-Adha is a holy festival for Muslims and also the second most important festival for them. It is observed on the tenth day of the Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth or the last month as per the Islamic calendar and the festival lasts for four days.

The festival marks the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham's son Ishmael at the command of God. To pay the honour to Prophet Abraham, sheep are ritually sacrificed and distributed among each other. 

What is Eid-al-Adha mean?

Eid-ul-Adha is the second most significant festival of Islam after Eid-ul-Fitr and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and celebrated across the globe. In Arabic, Eid-ul-Adha means the festival of sacrifice because on this day Prophet Abraham sacrificed his son as per the command of God.

Eid-ul-Adha is also spelt as Id-al-Adha, and the festival is also known as Id-al-Qurban or al-Id al-Kabir. The festival is known by different names, Kurban Bayrami in Turkey, Hari Raya Haji in Malaysia and Singapore and Tabski in West Africa.

According to the Islamic lunar calendar, eid-ul-Adha falls in the tenth month, known as Dhu-al-Hijjah. This year Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated on Monday, June 17, 2024.

How Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated?

On this auspicious festival, Muslims wear new clothes and visit mosques to offer special prayers to the Almighty. People visit friends' and family's houses to greet 'Eid Mubarak', meanwhile, they also exchange gifts with each other.

The main ritual of Eid-ul-Adha is the sacrifice of an animal like a goat, sheep or camel, and then distributed into three categories. One-third goes to the poor family, the second-third is distributed among friends and neighbors, and the third is enjoyed by the family.

This ritual also signifies the importance of sharing with one another and with the less fortunate. Delicious meat dishes are also prepared on this day, along with desserts, and barbeque parties are also organized at home.

Why Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated?

Eid-ul-Adha is an important festival for Muslims because, according to the Qur'an, the prophet Abraham sacrificed his son Ishmael on this day.

It is said that God ordered Abraham in his dream to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Seeing that Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son, God sent the angel Gabriel with a giant ram.

Gabriel then informs Abraham that his dream vision has been fulfilled and instructs him to sacrifice a ram instead of his son Ishmael. Eid-al-Adha also marks the climax of the fifth pillar of Islam, Hajj.
