How Vanchinathan Thangavel is building an industrial ecosystem that strengthens India’s manufacturing ambitions

Vanchinathan Thangavel did not inherit an industrial empire. He built an ecosystem. From a farming village in Tamil Nadu to boardrooms shaping India’s manufacturing ambitions, his journey has been driven less by circumstance than by conviction. What began as the dream of a young engineer determined to build semiconductor capabilities has evolved into one of the country’s most diversified industrial groups, spanning defence, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, and infrastructure. Along the way, setbacks became strategic turning points, and every new venture was designed not to stand alone but to strengthen the next.

At a time when India is accelerating its manufacturing ambitions, his journey reflects more than entrepreneurial success. It illustrates how engineering-led enterprises can contribute to national industrial capability.

The Boy Who Looked Beyond the Horizon

The monsoon rains had turned the fields of Ambalapattu into a mirror of the sky. Young Vanchinathan Thangavel stood ankle-deep in the soil beside his father, helping tend the family’s crops while often finding himself drawn to the stars above. Long before he entered a laboratory or factory, he had developed a fascination with astrophysics and the invisible systems that governed the universe.

Years later, that same curiosity continues to shape the way he thinks—not about galaxies, but about industries. Where others see individual businesses, Thangavel sees interconnected systems. Where many entrepreneurs build companies, he builds ecosystems in which every investment strengthens another, every capability reinforces the next, and every business contributes to a larger industrial vision.

The story of India’s economic transformation is often told through software, startups, and digital innovation. Yet another equally significant transformation is taking place inside factories, research centres, defence laboratories, and manufacturing facilities. As global supply chains are reconfigured and nations seek greater self-reliance in critical technologies, manufacturing has once again become central to economic competitiveness. It is within this changing landscape that Thangavel has carved his path.

Born and raised in Ambalapattu village in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, he completed his schooling in Tamil medium before pursuing Electronics and Communication Engineering at Anna University. His early years instilled two qualities that continue to define his leadership—discipline learned from agriculture and curiosity nurtured through science.

“We hail from a farming background,” he reflects. “I had a fair knowledge of agriculture because I worked alongside my father. Engineering was the game changer.”

That transformation began during his university years. While pursuing engineering, he participated in the EDUSAT programme, an initiative designed to bridge academia and industry through advanced technical training. The experience distinguished him from many of his peers and eventually opened the door to the semiconductor industry after graduating in 2006.

For a young engineer fascinated by electronics and advanced technology, it appeared to be the perfect beginning. But the defining chapter of his career unfolded outside India.

The Entrepreneurial Pivot

During his time in Malaysia, working in semiconductor design, he observed something that fundamentally altered his understanding of entrepreneurship. Skilled engineers, many with only a few years of professional experience, were leaving secure jobs to establish businesses of their own.“It was an eye-opener,” he recalls. “I realised entrepreneurship was not a birthright. It was a decision.”

That realisation brought him back to Chennai in 2008, where he established JEANUVS with an ambitious objective—to build semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in India. The vision was bold. The timing, however, proved difficult.

While the company developed strong engineering and design capabilities, large-scale semiconductor manufacturing remained beyond reach. For many entrepreneurs, such a setback would have marked the end of the journey. For Thangavel, it became the beginning of a different one. Rather than viewing the experience as failure, he treated it as a lesson in understanding the larger industrial landscape. “It was

a learning experience,” he says.

"I discovered the essence of diversification. Not random diversification. Structural diversification. The kind that makes each part of the system stronger because the other parts exist.”

That philosophy has remained the foundation of every strategic decision since.

Building an Industrial Ecosystem

Today, Jeanuvs, Yeemak, and the VIDVEDAA Group of Companies operate as three complementary verticals, each serving a distinct segment of India’s industrial ecosystem. Rather than functioning as independent businesses, these verticals operate as interconnected capabilities, collectively strengthening the Group’s manufacturing depth, technological expertise, and execution capability. JEANUVS has grown far beyond its origins as a semiconductor design venture. It has evolved into a defence and aerospace technology company delivering mission-critical solutions across avionics, radar systems, navigation technologies, underwater systems, drones, anti-drone platforms, robotics, space applications, nuclear systems, and artillery ammunition. Its integrated ecosystem combines research, engineering, precision manufacturing, and system development under one umbrella, enabling the company to contribute to India’s strategic and defence capabilities.

One of its most ambitious initiatives is the development of what is expected to become India’s largest ammunition filling facility—a ₹4,000 crore project designed to significantly strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing. Spread over more than 2,500 acres and being developed in phases, the facility is expected to support large-scale production while creating thousands of direct employment opportunities. With integrated logistics infrastructure, including an airstrip for defence transportation, the project reflects the group’s long-term commitment to strengthening national manufacturing capability rather than simply expanding production capacity. If JEANUVS represents strategic technology, YEEMAK serves as the group’s advanced manufacturing engine. Established as an integrated OEM and ODM manufacturing ecosystem, YEEMAK serves the consumer electronics, home appliances, mobility systems, medical devices, telecom, energy, and precision manufacturing sectors. Through the acquisitions of CJ Polytech, India SeAH Singadivakkam, and India SeAH Pune, along with strategic partnerships—including collaborations with Daedong and Digitech Vision—the company has continuously expanded its manufacturing capabilities while supporting leading global brands such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Daikin, Hyundai, and Kia. Rather than operating as a conventional contract manufacturer, YEEMAK has positioned itself as a long-term manufacturing partner, deeply embedded within global supply chains.

The third pillar, VIDVEDAA, addresses another challenge that industrial expansion often overlooks—infrastructure. Initially created to support the group’s own manufacturing requirements, it has grown into a national engineering, procurement, and construction platform delivering industrial, commercial, and institutional infrastructure projects across India. Having developed more than four million square feet within seven years, the company has become an important execution partner for complex industrial developments, providing the physical foundation on which future manufacturing growth depends. Viewed individually, each business is substantial. Viewed together, they reveal something more significant. Every manufacturing facility creates demand for infrastructure. Every infrastructure project supports future manufacturing.

Every technology partnership strengthens engineering capability. Every engineering capability enhances defence, aerospace, and industrial production. It is this interconnected design that defines Thangavel’s approach.

My role has evolved from technical founder to ecosystem architect,” he explains. “I don’t merely set strategy. I ensure every facility, partnership, and investment reinforces every other.”

That philosophy extends well beyond diversification. Every strategic decision is evaluated through what he describes as an ‘Indispensability Matrix’. Instead of asking whether an opportunity promises rapid growth, he asks three different questions.

Does it deepen capabilities that global supply chains cannot easily replicate? Does it strengthen operational resilience? Will it create long-term value? Only when all three answers are affirmative does the investment move forward. This disciplined framework has enabled the group to expand while maintaining strategic coherence, ensuring that growth compounds rather than fragments.

It also explains why the organisation increasingly speaks about building capability rather than market share. “The only monopoly worth fighting for is the monopoly on being indispensable,” says Thangavel.

For him, indispensability is not about dominance. It is about creating technologies, manufacturing capabilities, engineering expertise, and industrial infrastructure that become difficult to replace—both for customers and for the nation itself.

Growth with Purpose

The philosophy has also shaped the group’s geographic expansion. Rather than concentrating operations in a single location, Jeanuvs, Yeemak, and the VIDVEDAA Group of Companies have built capabilities across strategically important manufacturing corridors. Sriperumbudur has become the hub for defence and aerospace manufacturing. Pune strengthens precision engineering through advanced metal manufacturing. Sri City supports the Group’s growing electronics ecosystem, while Thoothukudi’s proximity to one of India’s major ports positions it as a natural base for export-oriented electronics and PCB manufacturing. The strategy is deliberate. Each location has been selected not simply for availability of land or incentives but for the role it plays within a much larger manufacturing network. The next phase of that network is already taking shape.

The group is currently constructing six new manufacturing plants across Sriperumbudur, Panapakkam, Gummidipoondi, Sri City, and Pune to support end-to-end manufacturing of televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Complementing this expansion are an ₹11,000 crore manufacturing commitment in Andhra Pradesh, expected to generate over 20,500 jobs, and a ₹3,500 crore investment in Thoothukudi focused on PCB and consumer electronics manufacturing. Together, these initiatives reflect the group’s transition from component manufacturing towards complete system manufacturing across multiple sectors. What makes this expansion distinctive is that it follows a carefully layered progression.

Rather than pursuing unrelated opportunities, each investment extends existing capabilities. Every manufacturing facility increases engineering expertise. Every acquisition strengthens the supply chain. Every technology partnership expands technical competence. Every infrastructure project creates the foundation for future industrial growth. The result is an organisation designed to compound capability over time. Senior members of the organisation often describe Thangavel less as a founder and more as an institution builder. What began with a small team of around fifteen engineers has evolved into a diversified engineering ecosystem that has trained and mentored more than 500 specialists across radar technologies, avionics, embedded systems, RF and microwave electronics, mixed-signal platforms, and defence-oriented product development. Many within the leadership team believe that this sustained investment in engineering talent has become one of the group’s greatest competitive strengths.

That emphasis on capability development extends beyond people. Under his leadership, dedicated engineering teams have worked to absorb, adapt, and localise technologies originating from global markets, gradually building indigenous manufacturing processes and engineering expertise rather than relying solely on imported solutions. Over the years, the organisation has earned the confidence of institutions such as DRDO, the Indian Air Force, ISRO, the Department of Atomic Energy, and other strategic organisations by consistently delivering complex engineering solutions for mission-critical environments. This credibility did not emerge overnight.

The company began from modest beginnings—a small engineering operation working from a garage and a compact office before steadily expanding into an integrated research, development, testing, validation, and manufacturing ecosystem spanning approximately 150,000 square feet. Along the way, it delivered more than 6,000 engineering solutions for defence and strategic-sector customers, reflecting not just technical capability but an ability to execute consistently over time.

Leading from the Factory Floor

Despite the scale of the organisation today—with twelve operational facilities, over 7,500 employees, and businesses serving both strategic and commercial sectors—Thangavel’s leadership style remains grounded in engineering rather than hierarchy. “My leadership style is architectural rather than charismatic,” he says. He prefers spending time on factory floors, in design laboratories, and at project sites instead of relying solely on boardroom presentations. For him, strategy has little meaning unless it is closely connected to execution. As he puts it, “the distance between strategy and execution should be measured in metres, not memoranda”, a philosophy that explains why he remains closely involved in the environments where ideas become products.

That proximity to operations also shapes the way he builds teams. Technical competence is essential, but it is only one part of the equation.

He looks equally for curiosity, resilience, and people who view constraints as problems waiting to be solved rather than reasons to stop. Engineers are encouraged to understand not only the technical aspects of their work but also its larger purpose, whether strengthening national security through defence technologies or reinforcing India’s position within global manufacturing supply chains.

The Long View

Looking ahead, Vanchinathan Thangavel believes the manufacturing landscape is entering one of its most significant periods of transformation. Global supply chains are being restructured. Countries are seeking greater technological independence. The distinction between defence and commercial technologies continues to narrow. In this environment, he believes long-term competitiveness will depend less on cost advantages and more on technological depth, vertically integrated manufacturing, and resilient domestic ecosystems. “I see three fundamental shifts,” he says. “Supply chain sovereignty will become a geopolitical imperative. The line between defence and commercial technology will continue to blur. And India will emerge as a credible alternative in global manufacturing for organisations that have invested in capability rather than simply scale.”

His own roadmap reflects that belief. The group’s long-term ambition extends into PCs, laptops, telecom infrastructure equipment, and eventually semiconductor manufacturing—the very aspiration that first inspired his entrepreneurial journey nearly two decades ago. This time, however, the vision is supported by something the original venture

lacked—an ecosystem.

Every manufacturing plant, technology partnership, engineering centre, infrastructure project, and strategic investment contributes to a larger architecture designed to reinforce itself over time. “Our vision is to build enterprises that endure, lead, and create lasting value for future generations,” he says. “We are not expanding for the sake of expansion. Every new capability must strengthen the ecosystem we are building.” For all the scale of his industrial ambitions, some habits have remained unchanged. Whenever time permits, he returns to Ambalapattu. He still spends time on the farm.

The experience, he says, reminds him that growth cannot be rushed—that whether one is cultivating crops or building factories, enduring success comes from patience, preparation, and disciplined execution.

It is a philosophy that has quietly guided every stage of his journey. From a village classroom to advanced manufacturing. From semiconductor design to defence technologies. From one engineering venture to a diversified industrial ecosystem.

At a time when India is strengthening its manufacturing capabilities and redefining its role in global supply chains, Vanchinathan Thangavel’s journey represents more than entrepreneurial success. It demonstrates how engineering discipline, long-term thinking and strategic patience can create institutions that endure beyond individual businesses.
