Apple waited seven years to enter the foldable-phone race. It has finally arrived with the ₹2.99 lakh iPhone Duo. But the real story isn't that Apple made a phone that folds. It is what the company changed around the fold.

Apple is late to foldables.

Samsung has been refining its Galaxy Z Fold line for years. Google has entered the category. Chinese manufacturers have pushed thinner bodies, larger displays and increasingly sophisticated hinges.

So when Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, it was not entering an unexplored market. It was entering a category that had already learned what works and what doesn't.

And that makes the Duo more interesting.

01 — THE TWO SCREENS FINALLY AGREE

The most important change may be one of the least glamorous.

Both Duo displays use the same aspect ratio.

On many rival foldables, the outer and inner screens have noticeably different proportions. Open the phone, and apps may rearrange themselves.

Apple's approach is designed to make the transition more seamless.

The content gets a bigger canvas without completely changing its shape.

For someone reading an article, checking a document or browsing a webpage, that could make the fold feel less disruptive.

THE TRADE-OFF

The outer display is only 5.4 inches.

Apple has effectively chosen continuity over a large cover screen.

02 — APPLE DIDN'T REMOVE THE CREASE. IT ATTACKED THE REFLECTION.

The inner display uses a nano-texture surface designed to reduce glare and reflections.

That matters because the crease becomes visible partly because light reflects differently from the folded section.

Apple's solution is therefore partly optical.

The crease is still there.

It is simply harder for the eye to notice.

The company has also used high-strength glass and a layered structure around the folding panel.

03 — THE HINGE HAS A SECRET WEAPON

Inside the Duo's hinge are more than 100 components.

But the unusual part isn't the number.

Apple says machine-learning software is used during manufacturing to match individual hinges with housings according to their best fit.

In other words, software is helping solve a mechanical manufacturing problem.

That could matter enormously at scale.

04 — iOS 27 IS WHERE THE FOLD BECOMES USEFUL

Apple's bigger challenge was never making the screen bend.

It was making iOS understand that it can.

iOS 27 introduces a new interface designed around the Duo's two-screen architecture.

• Save app pairs

• Use Siri while viewing another application

• Move between the inner and outer screens

The Duo's camera system is not the most ambitious in the category.

Instead, Apple is trying to make the fold itself useful for photography.

With Duo Preview, people being photographed can see themselves on the outer display while the rear cameras capture the image.

That turns the phone into something closer to a tiny self-monitoring camera.

The Duo also brings on-device AI features such as Smart Take, which can analyse a scene and capture the moment when subjects are ready.

THE CAMERA TRADE-OFF

The Duo does not carry the full camera hardware of Apple's Pro models.

The foldable's camera story is therefore less about having every possible lens and more about using the two-screen design differently.

06 — TWO BATTERIES, ONE PHONE

The battery is split across the two halves of the device.

That allows Apple to use space on both sides of the hinge while managing the cells as a single battery system.
