Building Institutions That Shape Generations

Jai Prakash

The true measure of an institution lies not in responding to change, but in anticipating it.” The story of Techno India Group did not begin with the ambition to build one of Eastern India’s largest education ecosystems. It began with a question.

In the early 1980s, West Bengal had very few opportunities for quality private technical education. Every year, thousands of talented students left the state in search of better prospects elsewhere, creating a steady brain drain. While most people accepted it as an inevitable reality, Satyam Roychowdhury and his brother Goutam Roychowdhury saw an opportunity to change the narrative.

At a time when computers were still a novelty and typing classes remained the preferred choice for students, the brothers envisioned a future where digital literacy would become an essential life skill. In 1985, they founded the Institute of Computer Engineers (India) (ICE(I)) in Chinsurah with just seven students and a single computer, an investment that laid the foundation for Bengal’s first affordable private computer training centre. What started as a modest initiative soon evolved into a movement that democratised computer education across the state and eventually became Techno India Group.

Over four decades later, that same vision continues to guide an institution that has grown far beyond education, creating an ecosystem that spans universities, schools, healthcare, media, publishing, sports, hospitality and philanthropy. Mr. Roychowdhury has long believed that “quality education should never be a privilege reserved for metropolitan cities.”

From Education to an Ecosystem

For Satyam Roychowdhury, education has never been confined to classrooms. It has always been about building institutions that create opportunities, nurture talent and contribute to society over generations. Over four decades, Techno India Group has grown into an expansive network spanning 103+ campuses, six universities, over 20 engineering colleges, 35+ public schools, business schools, ITIs and a medical college, offering students a seamless academic journey from Kindergarten to PhD. Alongside its flagship institutions, Techno India Group, Sister Nivedita University and Techno India University, Tripura, the ecosystem integrates engineering, medicine, management, law, design, media, architecture, humanities and emerging technologies within industry-oriented learning environments.

Its vision extends well beyond education. Through Aajkaal Publishers and Millennium Post, the Group contributes to journalism and intellectual discourse. Its growing healthcare network, including multi-speciality hospitals, specialised eye care and dedicated women’s healthcare facilities, reflects the same commitment to transforming lives beyond classrooms. Hospitality, sports, cultural initiatives and the Satyam Roychowdhury Foundation further reinforce a philosophy that meaningful institutions should contribute to society in multiple ways.

Rather than viewing these as separate ventures, Mr. Roychowdhury considers them interconnected institutions united by a common purpose of creating lasting value through knowledge, innovation and social impact. As Mr. Roychowdhury puts it, “Success is measured not by scale alone, but by the lasting impact an institution creates.”

Learning for Tomorrow

Higher education today is evolving faster than ever before. For Mr. Roychowdhury, staying relevant means anticipating change instead of reacting to it. This philosophy has shaped Techno India Group’s approach to academic excellence, where traditional education is complemented by research, entrepreneurship, industry collaboration and global exposure. Programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, Data Science, Biotechnology and Semiconductor Technology sit alongside established disciplines, ensuring students graduate with skills aligned to tomorrow’s economy. Global collaboration has become another defining pillar of this vision. Academic partnerships with universities across the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, Poland, Thailand, South Africa and several other countries create opportunities for research, faculty exchange and international learning while strengthening the Group’s global outlook.

At the same time, continuous curriculum upgrades, technology-enabled classrooms, specialised laboratories, innovation hubs and industry partnerships enable institutions within the Group to evolve alongside the changing needs of students and employers. “We view change not as a challenge, but as an opportunity to redefine excellence,” asserts Mr. Roychowdhury.

Leading Through Purpose

While innovation has shaped the Group’s growth, its foundation remains rooted in accessibility, excellence and institution building.

One of Mr. Roychowdhury’s proudest milestones has been extending quality school education beyond metropolitan cities through Techno India Group Public Schools. Established in 2005, the network has brought technology-enabled CBSE education, modern learning environments and holistic development to districts across West Bengal, reflecting his long-held belief that geography should never determine educational opportunity.

The same philosophy guides the organisation’s approach to talent. Faculty development, research, industry engagement and international collaborations create continuous opportunities for professional growth, while fostering a culture where educators and professionals become partners in a shared mission rather than simply employees of an institution. Speaking about the organisation’s culture, Mr. Roychowdhury says, “People are our greatest strength. Institutions are ultimately built by those who believe in their purpose.”

His contributions have earned numerous honours, including the Edupreneur of the Year Award, India’s 100 Greatest Leaders, Asia One India’s Greatest Leaders Award, the Chanakya Award, Gandhi Peace Award, Rashtriya Ratna Award and Pride of India Award. He also became the first Indian to receive the title of Honorary Academician from the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino, Italy, as a Maecenas (Patron of the Arts), recognising his contributions to education, culture and the arts.

A Legacy Built to Endure

Looking ahead, Mr. Roychowdhury envisions Techno India as a nationally transformative knowledge ecosystem that extends well beyond its strong roots in Eastern India. His focus remains on expanding multidisciplinary education, strengthening global partnerships and building future-ready ecosystems across emerging disciplines while continuing to grow the Group’s presence in healthcare, sports, fashion, skill development and cultural initiatives. At the heart of this expansion lies a simple philosophy: institutions should create opportunities that outlive their founders.

That belief also defines Mr. Roychowdhury’s work as an accomplished author. Through bestselling English and Bengali books spanning literature, travel, history and biographies, he has continued to celebrate knowledge, culture and human potential beyond the boardroom.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, his advice remains as relevant today as it was when Techno India began with seven students and one computer: identify meaningful opportunities, embrace continuous learning, remain resilient and build with purpose.

Summing up his entrepreneurial philosophy, Mr. Roychowdhury shares, “Entrepreneurship is not merely about building successful businesses; it is about creating enduring value and contributing to nation-building.” Because while businesses may succeed, institutions leave a legacy.
