Diamond Sodhi - Director - CAANWINGS Consultants Pvt. Ltd.
Australia’s Skilled Migration programme has become one of the world’s most structured pathways for professionals seeking international career opportunities. As workforce priorities continue to evolve, successful migration increasingly depends on informed planning, technical expertise, and a clear understanding of changing policy requirements. Long before Australian Skilled Migration emerged as a specialised consulting practice in India, Diamond Sodhi recognised the need for an advisory approach built on ethical consulting, technical expertise, and informed decision-making.
An MBA graduate from Colorado Technical University, USA, Sodhi began her career with the International Admissions Department of an American university, where she gained first-hand exposure to international student recruitment and the complexities of global education systems. Her subsequent experience with Bank First in the United States further strengthened her understanding of professional ethics, client service, and international business practices. Those experiences shaped her entrepreneurial journey after returning to India.
“Having personally experienced the uncertainty and complexity of studying and building a career overseas, I realised there was a need for a more professional, ethical, and strategic approach to migration consulting. I wanted to build a migration consulting practice founded on integrity, transparency, compliance, and personalised guidance,” says Sodhi.
That vision led to the establishment of CAANWINGS Consultants Pvt. Ltd. Established in 1998 with an initial focus on international education and specialising in Australian Skilled Migration since 2002, the organisation has steadily grown into one of India’s recognised advisory practices. From the outset, its objective extended beyond assisting clients with visa applications, focusing instead on helping individuals understand migration pathways, evaluate eligibility, prepare comprehensive documentation, and make informed decisions that support their long-term education, career, and settlement goals.
Today, CAANWINGS provides advisory services across Australian Skilled Migration, permanent residence pathways, Partner and Subsequent Entrant Migration, Skills Assessment guidance, family and partner visas, visitor visas, study abroad counselling, student visa applications, IELTS and PTE preparation, documentation management, and complete visa lifecycle support. Australia Skilled Migration remains the organisation’s principal area of specialisation.
“Migration decisions shape a person’s entire future,” Sodhi reflects.
"Our responsibility is to help clients understand the process, evaluate their options realistically, and choose a pathway that supports their long-term goals.”
The Australian Skilled Migration landscape has changed considerably over the past two decades. Occupation lists, Skills Assessment requirements, state nomination criteria, employer-sponsored pathways, and visa policies continue to evolve in response to Australia’s workforce requirements. These changes have increased the importance of informed planning throughout the migration process.
CAANWINGS responded by building its practice around structured case management, research-led analysis, continuous policy monitoring, and evidence-based migration planning, enabling every engagement to begin with a comprehensive eligibility assessment and a personalised migration strategy.
“Every applicant’s circumstances are different. We assess each case carefully because informed planning at the beginning often determines the quality of the outcome later,” explains Sodhi.
Supporting this approach is a clearly defined philosophy centred on integrity, professionalism, transparency, and client-focused service. Guided by a vision to empower individuals and families through ethical, knowledge-driven migration and international education solutions, CAANWINGS remains committed to delivering accurate migration advice, regulatory compliance, transparent communication, end-to-end guidance, and public awareness initiatives that help applicants make informed decisions with confidence.
The entrepreneurial vision of Managing Director Dr. Balraj Gupta has also contributed significantly to the organisation’s development. A physician and healthcare entrepreneur, Dr. Gupta established a strong culture of transparent business practices and client-centric service that continues to influence CAANWINGS’ operations.
After building a network of more than 75 franchise offices across India, CAANWINGS consolidated its operations at its headquarters in Jalandhar to strengthen operational control, service quality, and client outcomes while maintaining consistent professional standards. Continuous monitoring of occupation lists, Skills Assessment updates, labour market trends, and government policy enables the organisation to refine migration strategies as requirements evolve.
This knowledge-driven approach has earned CAANWINGS a reputation for technical expertise, structured consulting, and long-term client guidance, helping thousands of skilled professionals and their families pursue careers and settlement opportunities in Australia through carefully planned migration strategies.
Building a specialised migration advisory practice brought its own share of challenges. When Sodhi entered the profession, migration consulting was still developing in India, and in many regions it lacked the level of professionalism and public confidence that clients expected while making life-changing decisions. The industry was also largely dominated by student visa consulting, driven by admissions and university partnerships, while Australian Skilled Migration remained a relatively niche area requiring technical expertise, detailed planning, and long-term commitment.
For Sodhi, establishing credibility meant changing perceptions as much as building a business.
She says, “When I started, I wanted to demonstrate that migration consulting could be built on ethics, transparency, competence, and genuine client outcomes. Building Australian Skilled Migration into a trusted consulting practice required patience, perseverance, and consistency over many years.”
Permanent migration demanded a different conversation with clients. While overseas education often marked the beginning of their journey, most aspired to build long-term careers and settle permanently in Australia. Helping applicants align their education, occupation, Skills Assessment, and migration pathway required strategic planning and continuous guidance. As Australia’s migration system continued to evolve through changing occupation lists, Skills Assessment requirements, visa policies, state nomination criteria, and government priorities, CAANWINGS strengthened its investment in research, staff training, compliance systems, and evidence-based case planning to ensure clients received informed and current advice.
The company’s long-term philosophy was equally evident in another strategic decision. Instead of measuring success by the number of enquiries or applications processed, CAANWINGS focused on selecting genuine and eligible cases where there was a realistic pathway to migration.
“We chose not to chase sales targets or accept every enquiry,” Sodhi asserts. “Our focus has always been on selecting genuine, eligible clients and delivering quality outcomes. It meant sacrificing short-term revenue, but it helped us build a sustainable business founded on trust and credibility.”
This philosophy continues to shape every client engagement through realistic advice, transparent communication, and carefully planned migration strategies that help applicants make informed decisions from the outset.
For Sodhi, one of her biggest accomplishments has been contributing to the professionalisation of Australian Skilled Migration consulting in India. Looking back on more than two decades, she believes the industry’s progress has been driven by greater technical expertise, higher ethical standards, and stronger accountability to clients.
"The greatest lesson I have learned is that ethics and competence are not obstacles to commercial success—they are the foundation of it,” she reflects. “Staying true to my business philosophy has earned the respect of clients, industry stakeholders, and peers while helping establish CAANWINGS as a recognised name in Australian Skilled Migration.”
While migration consulting remains her primary area of expertise, Sodhi has consistently viewed knowledge sharing as an important part of her professional responsibility. Alongside her MBA, she holds a postgraduate qualification in Journalism and completed an A Grade Creative Writing Programme at Stanford University’s School of Continuing Studies, strengthening her ability to communicate complex migration issues in a practical and accessible manner.
Over the years, Sodhi has established herself as an author, columnist, media commentator, and legal immigration expert, sharing insights on immigration policy, international mobility, entrepreneurship, and leadership through articles, webinars, podcasts, television appearances, and her educational platform, Visa Matters by Diamond Sodhi, where she simplifies complex migration issues for aspiring professionals and families.
Public education remains integral to CAANWINGS’ advisory philosophy. Through webinars, podcasts, blogs, policy updates, and social media, the organisation helps aspiring migrants understand changing migration requirements while continuously monitoring labour market trends, Skills Assessment updates, occupation lists, and government announcements. This combination of research, policy intelligence, and public awareness enables CAANWINGS to anticipate change, refine migration strategies, and provide advice aligned with current legislation and Australia’s evolving workforce needs.
“Every policy update tells a larger story about Australia’s workforce priorities. Understanding that direction allows us to guide applicants early and help them prepare before opportunities become more competitive,” notes Sodhi.
Australia’s Skilled Migration programme continues to evolve in response to changing workforce demands, demographic shifts, and economic priorities. As industries experience persistent shortages across professional and trade occupations, migration pathways are becoming increasingly focused on applicants who possess verified skills, relevant experience, and the ability to contribute from the outset.
Sodhi believes this evolution will redefine the role of migration consultants over the coming years. “Success will no longer depend simply on lodging visa applications. It will depend on providing comprehensive career planning, strategic migration advice, meticulous documentation, Skills Assessment preparation, and long-term workforce solutions,” she says.
This perspective is shaping the next phase of CAANWINGS’ journey. One of the organisation’s most significant initiatives is the development of a Trade Skills Assessment, Competency Development and Upskilling Centre, an initiative designed to prepare experienced trades professionals for Australia’s Skills Assessment requirements and evolving workforce expectations. Australia continues to experience shortages across a wide range of skilled trades, including automotive, engineering, construction, electrical, metal fabrication, diesel mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, cabinet making, refrigeration, and several other vocational occupations. While many experienced Indian tradespersons possess the practical expertise required by Australian employers, demonstrating those competencies according to Australian assessment standards often presents a challenge.
Recognising this gap, CAANWINGS plans to establish a centre that combines competency-based technical training, practical workshops, mock trade assessments, workplace communication development, and assessment-focused mentoring. The initiative aims to prepare candidates for assessments conducted by organisations such as Trades Recognition Australia (TRA), VETASSESS, and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), helping improve assessment outcomes while developing professionals who are ready to contribute to Australia’s workforce.
Known as Trades Pass, the initiative represents an important expansion of the company’s role within the migration ecosystem.
“Our objective is to bridge the gap between experience and assessment readiness. By aligning practical skills with Australian industry standards, we want to create a sustainable pipeline of globally job-ready trades professionals who can meet Australia’s workforce requirements with confidence,” explains Sodhi. The initiative also reflects the company’s broader vision of connecting skills development, migration strategy, and international career opportunities. Beyond supporting aspiring migrants, it seeks to contribute to Australia’s long-term workforce requirements while creating meaningful opportunities for experienced Indian trades professionals.
Although Australia’s migration landscape has evolved significantly since CAANWINGS began specialising in Australian Skilled Migration in 2002, the organisation’s core values have remained unchanged. Integrity, transparency, professional excellence, and client-centric advisory continue to guide every engagement, with each case built on detailed assessment, strategic planning, technical accuracy, and compliance with Australian immigration requirements.
Continuous learning, policy research, and knowledge sharing through seminars, webinars, podcasts, articles, and social media further enable the organisation to remain aligned with changing legislation and workforce priorities while helping clients make informed decisions about their future. For Sodhi, these values represent the foundation upon which the organisation has earned the trust of thousands of clients over the past twenty-five years. Success, she believes, is measured by the lives clients build after they arrive in Australia.
“For us, success is not measured only by the number of visas granted,” she says. “It is measured by the quality of life our clients achieve after migrating to Australia—the careers they build, the opportunities they access, the stability they create for their families, and the futures they are able to shape.”
Having guided thousands of skilled professionals and their families through the migration process, CAANWINGS takes equal pride in the referrals, long-term relationships, and success stories that continue long after the visa has been granted. These relationships remain the organisation’s strongest endorsement and a reflection of the confidence clients place in its advisory approach. Looking ahead, Sodhi sees Australian Skilled Migration becoming increasingly specialised, with greater emphasis on workforce readiness, verified competencies, employer requirements, and strategic planning. She believes organisations that combine technical expertise with ethical consulting and long-term guidance will be best positioned to serve aspiring migrants in this evolving environment.
Her advice to young entrepreneurs entering the migration consulting profession reflects the same philosophy that has guided her own career. “Build strong conceptual clarity before entering this industry,” she advises. "Migration consulting requires a deep understanding of visa subclasses, Skills Assessments, occupation lists, compliance requirements, and constantly changing policy directions. Gain practical experience, learn from real cases, complete the necessary legal formalities, and never compromise on ethical case selection. Credibility is your greatest asset, and integrity, transparency, technical expertise, and honest communication will always remain the strongest foundations for sustainable growth.”
More than two decades after beginning her journey, Diamond Sodhi continues to believe that migration is about far more than obtaining a visa. It is about helping individuals and families build sustainable futures through informed decisions, professional guidance, and responsible advisory services. As CAANWINGS continues to expand its role through specialised migration consulting and workforce development initiatives such as Trades Pass, her vision remains unchanged: to build a profession where technical expertise, ethical consulting, and trust continue to create lasting opportunities for skilled professionals pursuing a future in Australia.
