Muharram, Islamic New Year

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and holds deep spiritual and historical significance for Muslims across the world. It is one of the four sacred months in Islam, during which acts of devotion, reflection, and restraint are especially emphasised. While it signifies a new year in the Islamic lunar calendar, Muharram is not a celebratory occasion in the conventional sense. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is especially significant. It commemorates the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions, who stood for justice, truth, and moral integrity against oppression. For many, particularly within the Shia Muslim community, this period involves mourning rituals, processions, and gatherings that reflect on the values upheld at Karbala.
