The day is also celebrated as equality day. The world also knows him as the Father of the Indian Constitution. Apart from Ambedkar Jayanti, this day is also popularly known as Bhim Jayanti or Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Who was Dr. BR Ambedkar?

Dr BR Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, in a Dalit Mahar family and died on 6 December 1956 in Delhi. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the father of the Indian Constitution.

Ambedkar drafted the new Constitution of India on 26 November 1949, which is why he is known as the "Father of the Indian Constitution". Dr BR Ambedkar was the first Law and Justice Minister of India from 29 August 1947 to 24 January 1950.

He was a Lawyer, Politician, Polymath, Philosopher, Jurist, Anthropologist, Economist, Social Reformer and the Chief architect of the Indian Constitution. He was the one who fought for the Dalits community and stood for women and labour rights by raising his voice against the Indian Constitution.

Who started Ambedkar Jayanti?

Ambedkar Jayanti, or Bhima Jayanti, was first started by a social activist and a great follower of Ambedkar, Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay. He paid the first tribute to the father of the Indian Constitution on April 14, 1928, in Pune. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Ambedkar Jayanti.

Although Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated all over the nation, majorly, the communities of Dalits, tribals, and labourers pay homage to the idol of Dr Ambedkar.

In Chaitya Bhoomi Mumbai and Deeksha Bhoomi Nagpur, a special procession also takes place by his followers on this day. Cultural events, debates, and Stage dramas on the life of Dr BR Ambedkar are organised in schools, colleges and other institutions.

Apart from all this, it is mandatory for the President, Prime Minister and leaders of all political parties of India to pay homage to the sculpture of Dr BR Ambedkar at the Indian Constitution in New Delhi.

Why Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated?

In India, the commemoration of the birth anniversary of DR. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s Ambedkar Jayanti marks the remembrance and honour of DR. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s significant contributions toward India. He was the man behind the Indian Constitution of India.

In 1923, Ambedkar founded the Bahishkrit Sabha to spread the importance of education and improve the financial status of low-income people. He also started a special movement to destroy casteism in the country.

Along with this, he led some more social movements like the anti-priest movement, temple entry movement, anti-caste movement etc. In 1930, Ambedkar started a social movement in Nashik called Aslan to mark the entry into the temple.

He fought to protect the rights of the lower caste and also for the Dalit community, where he led some of the movements, which include Samantha Janta, Mook Nayak, Dalit Buddhist Movement. According to him, every person in society should be given equal rights.

His contribution towards the country proved to be very significant for India. Many programs are also organised in many institutions, and all leaders of political parties, the President of India and the PM also pay homage to the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar.
