Renuka Chowdhury was born to Air Commodore Suryanarayana Rao and Vasundhara, the latter hailing from Madanapalle, on 13 August 1954. She is the eldest of three daughters in her family. Her educational journey began at the prestigious Welham Girls' School in Dehradun.
Later, she pursued her Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Psychology from Bangalore University. In 1973, Renuka tied the knot with Sreedhar Chowdhury, embarking on a life that would eventually lead her into the complex world of Indian politics.
Renuka Chowdhury's political career took off in 1984 when she became a member of the Telugu Desam Party. She quickly made her presence felt as a member of the Rajya Sabha, serving two consecutive terms.
Her capabilities were recognised, and she was appointed as the Chief Whip of the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party from 1986 to 1998. Her dedication to public service and her ability to navigate the intricacies of politics became evident during this phase.
In 1997, she took on the role of Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the cabinet of H. D. Deve Gowda. Her tenure in this position helped lay the foundation for her future contributions in the field of healthcare and women's welfare.
In 1998, Renuka Chowdhury made a significant political move by leaving the Telugu Desam Party and joining the Indian National Congress. Her switch to the Congress party marked a new chapter in her political career, and she continued to climb the political ladder. In the 1999 and 2004 general elections, she was elected to the 13th and 14th Lok Sabha, representing Khammam.
Her responsibilities extended beyond her constituency, as she took on crucial roles, including memberships in the Committee on Finance (1999–2000) and the Committee on the Empowerment of Women (2000–2001). Her contributions in these committees highlighted her dedication to the betterment of society, with a focus on women's issues and financial matters.
In May 2004, Renuka Chowdhury assumed the role of the Minister of State for Tourism in the UPA I government. Her portfolio further expanded when she was appointed as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
During her term from January 2006 to May 2009, she worked tirelessly to address the critical issues surrounding women and child welfare in India.
Renuka Chowdhury's political journey was not without its share of challenges. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, she faced a tough contest and was ultimately defeated by Nama Nageswara Rao of the TDP from Khammam. However, her voice remained strong and unwavering.
Her stance against moral policing and her vocal support for young people's freedom garnered attention. In response to threats by groups attempting to restrict personal freedoms, she urged the youth to defy such efforts and stand up for their rights. Her words were a testament to her commitment to safeguarding individual liberties.
Renuka Chowdhury's reach extended beyond India's borders. She was part of a delegation of young political leaders chosen by the UK High Commission and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK, visiting London to study and understand the democratic processes there.
In February 2017, she spoke about the impact of demonetisation on the Indian economy during an event in Melbourne, Australia. Her overseas engagements showcased her grasp of global economic issues and her ability to represent India on an international stage.
Renuka Chowdhury made a significant return to politics as a spokesperson for the Congress party. Her eloquence and commitment to her political ideals were evident, earning her re-election to the Rajya Sabha in 2012.
