Born on January 4, 1957, into a distinguished Marwari family, Shobhana Bhartia inherited her entrepreneurial spirit from her father, KK Birla, a prominent industrialist and Congress party member.
Her lineage traces back to GD Birla, one of the revered figures in the Birla family dynasty.
Growing up in Kolkata, Shobhana received her education at Loreto House. She later graduated from Calcutta University. Her marriage to Shyam Sunder Bhartia, the Chairman of Jubilant LifeScience Limited, further connected her to the world of business.
Together, they have two sons, Priyavrat Bhartiya and Shamit Bhartiya, who also play active roles in the corporate landscape.
Shobhana Bhartia's entry into the media realm marked a significant milestone. In 1986, at the age of 29, she joined Hindustan Times as Chief Executive, making her the first woman to hold this position in a national newspaper and one of the youngest.
Her tenure was transformative, as she played a pivotal role in rejuvenating the Hindustan Times into a vibrant, modern newspaper.
Her responsibilities extended beyond editorial matters, as she oversaw the financial aspects of the publication.

In 2013, the ASSOCHAM Ladies League honoured her with the Delhi Women of the Decade Achievers Award for her outstanding contribution to nation-building through media and leadership.

She serves as the Vice Chairperson of the NGO Khushii, which operates telemedicine centres, a remedial school catering to 3,000 children, and a vocational training facility.
Additionally, she is a patron of the Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust, which pioneers inclusive education for children with and without disabilities.
Shobhana Bhartia's foray into politics further demonstrates her multifaceted capabilities. In 2005, she was nominated for the Padma Shri award for her contributions to journalism.
The following year, she entered the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, as a nominee of the United Progressive Alliance under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi.
Her nomination faced legal challenges in the Supreme Court due to her association with the Indian National Congress and her status as a "media baron."
However, the court upheld her nomination, emphasising the broad scope of "social service" under which she was nominated.
During her tenure, she introduced the "Child Marriage (Abolition) and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, 2006," highlighting her commitment to social reform.
