History-
The name Maharashtra was originated from rathi that means chariot driver. Its golden history started in the 2nd century BC when the first Buddhist caves were built. The name, Maharashtra first appeared in a 7th century in writing of Chinese traveler, Huan Tsang. Record says that Badami was the first Hindu King to rule the state during the 6th century.
One of the finest rulers of India, Shivaji Bhosle holds the highest place in Maratha history. He had founded the Maratha Empire and did a lifelong struggle against the Mughals. Sambhaji succeeded Shivaji, but he could not have managed the emperor. And, 1680 to 1707 is known as the period of instability in the history of Maharashtra.
Balaji Vishwanath, Bajirao Peshwa, Nanasaheb Peshwa, 'Thorale' Narayanrao Peshwa, 'Sawai' Madhaorao Peshwa were the other important rulers of Maharashtra. In 1803, the fall of Ahmednagar fort marked the end of Indian rule and British established its supremacy in Deccan. In 1804, military rule was established in the region, and the Peshwas remained rulers for namesake.
In 1960, the present state was formed with Bombay as the capital. And, Maharashtra became the main channel of cultural exchange between southern to northern India.
Culture-
