National Doctor's Day: Unknown and Amazing Facts You Should Know about Doctor's Day

Every year, 1 July is observed as a National Doctor's Day in India. It was initiated by the Government of India in 1991 on the birth and death anniversary of the renowned and legend physician of India, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr Roy was born on July 1, 1882, and also died on the  July 1, 1962, just on same date 80 years later. In 1961, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Doctor's Day in Different Country

The main purpose of Doctors' Day is to recognize and appreciate the numerous contributions of physicians to individual lives and societies. The date of celebration varies from country to country as per the event of commemoration used to mark the day. In the US, it is observed on March 30 while in Iran it is marked on August 23.  Several countries consider this day as a holiday.   In Brazil, it is celebrated as a holiday on October 18, the day on which the Catholic Church celebrates the birthday of Saint Luke. In Cuba, Doctors' Day is noted as a holiday on December 3 to remember the birthday of Carlos Juan Finlay.

History of the Day

Globally, the first Doctors' Day was marked on March 30th, 1933, in Winder, Georgia, US. It was originally begun by Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a prominent Georgian doctor, who wished to plan a day merely for remembering and honoring doctors. She selected the most reliable means to do that was to mail greeting cards to all of the doctors she knew of and to put flowers on the graves of dead practitioners. The flowers that she laid on the graves of these doctors were red carnations; this flower is still used to this day.
