Chaitra Navratri is a festival of the New Year according to the Hindu calendar. Chaitra Navratri falls during the starting season of spring in the month of March or April.

According to the Hindu calendar, March is known as “Chaitra”, and spring is known as ‘Vasanta” that is why this festival is known as Chaitra Navratri or Vasanta Navratri.

On the other hand, Navratri means “nine divine nights”; however, this is the festival of nine days where nine days are dedicated and worshipping of nine avatars of Goddes Durga. This festival is celebrated during the shukla paksha of Chaitra (March). 

Where is Chaitra Navratri celebrated?

Like other Navratri, Chaitra Navratri is one of the most awaited festivals for Hindus. It is celebrated across India, which includes West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Gujarat and in few other places. In every place, Chaitra Navratri is celebrated in its own way.

In West Bengal, beautiful pandals are made where the idol of the goddess Durga is kept. In Punjab, jagrans are held, and young girls are also invited and offered food and gifts.

This practice is commonly known as “Kanya Pujan”. In Gujarat, the nine days of Navratri are celebrated by dancing which is known as “Ras Garba”.

The very most efficient significance of Chaitra Navratri is fighting good over evil. According to Hindu Mythology, on this day, the goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura and won a victory over him. This is the reason devotees believe that Chaitra Navratri symbolises good over evil. 

Welcoming the new year

Chaitra Navratri is said to be the birth of the Universe though it signifies the new year festival. It is celebrated for well-being, strength and positive energy. This festival also marks the colourful spring with more fascinating and divine. 

Symbolising Power

It is said that the goddess Durga represents Shakti or feminine force though she is also known as Shakti. She is the combined power of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.

How Chaitra Navratri is celebrated?

Before the day of Chaitra Navratri comes, houses get cleaned and decorated. People keep fast for 9 days where potatoes, curd and fruits are allowed, and non-vegetarian, onions and garlic are not allowed.

The fast is broken on the last day of Navratri after the “hawan”. For 9 days, devotees keep on worshipping and chanting the Navratri mantras.
