The Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC- India's biggest oil and gas producing company, Shashi Shanker is an industry veteran. He holds 30 years of experience in diverse E&P activities.

Earlier Shanker was the director of technical and field services in ONGC. At 1st October 2017, he took over the charge as CMD and replaced Dinesh K Sarraf. Shanker is 58 years old and has a nearly four-year term until March 2021.

Under the leadership of Shashi, ONGC drilled the deepest deep-water well covering water depths of 3174 meters, a world record. Besides, he also led the team to one of the finest drilling performance in 2016-17 when ONGC set a new record of drilling over 500 walls.

It is the first time in the history of 23 years; ONGC has reached over 500-well mark. Apart from his role in ONGC, Shashi is also leading the overseas arm of the state-explorer, as also its other subsidiaries including ONGC Tripura Power Company, ONGC Petro-additions Ltd and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd.

Shashi has been a renowned drilling expert throughout his career and has been famous to be sensitive to the operational hazards of oil exploration on the environment and society.

Before his appointment as Director (T&FS) in 2012 in ONGC, he has measured his success path through senior management positions in numerous work-centers in the Institute of Drilling Technology, Dehradun; Assam Project; West Bengal Project and Deep Water group at Mumbai.

He was acclaimed for his outstanding performance in leading the deep/ultra-deep water campaign of ONGC that was christened 'Sagar Samriddhhi'.

Educational Qualification

Shashi Shanker is a Petroleum Engineer from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. He also holds an MBA degree with a specialization in Finance from IGNOU.

Furthermore, he has also received executive education from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.

ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas) is the largest crude oil and natural gas Company in India. It specializes in the exploration and production of crude oil and gas. The Company has joint ventures in oil fields in Vietnam, Norway, Egypt, Tunisia, Iran, and Australia and contributes around 70% to Indian domestic production.

Some other activities of the company include deep-sea explorations on the east and west coasts of India, and the exploration of coal bed methane. ONGC is a natural gas company and holds 11th position among global energy majors (Platts).

This is the only public sector Indian company that was featured in Fortune's 'Most Admired Energy Companies' list. In Forbes Global 2000, ONGC holds overall 183rd position in the world and 18th position in 'Oil and Gas operations'.

Besides, ONGE is on 26th rank among the biggest publicly traded global giants for its Corporate Governance practices and Transparency. Present-day, the organization is the most valued and largest E&P Company in the world, and one of the highest profit-making and dividend-paying enterprises.

  • Shashi Shanker received several awards notably "Young Engineer Award" and "Drilling Engineer of the Year 1998".

  • Shashi Shanker is among the 10 Indian CEOs named in the CEOWORLD magazine's global ranking of the world's most influential chief executives in 2019. This global ranking was measured by more 1,200 CEOs across 96 countries.

  • During his tenure, one of the most remarkable projects of ONGC, 'Sagar Samriddhhi' created a world record by drilling the deepest deep-water well (at 3174 mts).
