Political Ascendancy

Sheikh Hasina's political journey began amid tumultuous times. Following her father's assassination in 1975, her family faced further tragedy as her mother, three brothers, and several other family members were brutally murdered. Sheikh Hasina, however, managed to escape the carnage and spent several years in exile in various countries.

She returned to Bangladesh in 1981 and gradually became a prominent political figure. She took on a leadership role in the Awami League, the political party her father had founded. Under her leadership, the Awami League emerged as a powerful force in Bangladeshi politics, advocating for democracy and social justice.

Prime Ministership

Sheikh Hasina was first elected as Prime Minister in 1996, marking her first term in office. Her leadership was characterised by efforts to promote economic development, reduce poverty, and strengthen democratic institutions. Her government also worked on improving relations with neighbouring countries, particularly India.

In her later terms as Prime Minister (she has held the position for a total of four non-consecutive terms), Sheikh Hasina continued to focus on infrastructure development, education, and social welfare programs. Her administration's efforts to address issues such as maternal health, education, and climate change adaptation were commendable.

Personal Life

Sheikh Hasina has maintained a relatively private personal life despite her extensive political career. She married Dr. M. A. Wazed Miah, a nuclear scientist and a physicist, in 1968.

The couple had one son, Sajeeb Wazed, who is also involved in Bangladeshi politics and a daughter, Saima Wazed. Tragically, Dr. Miah passed away in 2009, marking a significant loss in Sheikh Hasina's personal life.
